Abstract. The purpose of this study is to examine Tatar service landownership and Tatar cemeteries in the Turovsky Stan of the Kashira District in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Research materials: Kashira District census books 7086 and 7087 (1586–1587).
Results and scientific novelty: Beginning in the second half of the 16th century, lands in the lower reaches of the Lopasnya River, at its confluence with the Oka River, were granted as manorial land to Tatar servicemen who carried out diplomatic missions in nearby Islamic (and possibly non-Islamic) countries. These Tatars established a cemetery on the left bank of the Lopasnya River, opposite the village of Sokolova, and used it for burial of their deceased according to Muslim rites. The events of the Time of Troubles led to a redistribution of the owners of these manorial lands and, in at least one case, to the formation of a service estate. In the 1620s, these lands belonged to newly baptized people of Tatar descent. Documents from the 1670s offer a rare opportunity to see direct traces of the Tatars’ long-term presence in this land. In tales of newly baptized Kashira residents and peasants about the open land in the Turovsky stan of the Kashira district, located on the left bank of the Lopasnya River opposite the estate of Yevtifey Soymonov, and dated to December 1677, we find direct evidence of the existence of Tatar cemeteries there. The cemetery was abandoned, but its existence was not forgotten by local peasants even in the 1670s.
